Obamacare Has Arrived!

I was up bright and early this morning checking out Obamacare and how it affects me personally. I will admit that I ran into quite a few errors while attempting to use the site but honestly, that should be expected. This is major for the United States so imagine all the people attempting to access the site at one time. Overall I found the site to be extremely informative and I believe even my father would have no problem enrolling once all the hoopla dies down. I ran a few estimates to share to give you an idea of how much the plan will cost.

One thing to remember is: In general, employees who are offered insurance through work are not eligible for subsidized exchange coverage, so long as their insurance meets specified requirements. You would only be eligible for subsidized exchange coverage if your income is between 1 and 4 times the federal poverty level and you would have to pay more than 9.5% of your household income for your own coverage through the insurance offered by your employer.

The first calculation is based on 1 person that makes 25,000 per year in GA with no children.

Results
The information below is about subsidized exchange coverage. Note that subsidies are only available for people purchasing coverage on their own in the exchange (not through an employer). Depending on your state’s eligibility criteria, you or some members of your family may qualify for Medicaid.

Household income in 2014:
218% of poverty level

Unsubsidized annual health insurance premium in 2014:
$2,535

Maximum % of income you have to pay for the non-tobacco premium, if eligible for a subsidy:
6.92%

Amount you pay for the premium:
$1,729 per year (which equals 6.92% of your household income and covers 68% of the overall premium)

You could receive a government tax credit subsidy of up to:
$806 (which covers 32% of the overall premium)

Bronze Plan
The premium and subsidy amounts above are based on a Silver plan. You have the option to apply the subsidy toward the purchase of other levels of coverage, such as a Gold plan (which would be more comprehensive) or a Bronze plan (which would be less comprehensive).

Calculation 2 is for One adult with 1 child that makes 25000 a year. You will find that the cost goes down for a single parent with child.

Household income in 2014:
161% of poverty level

Unsubsidized annual health insurance premium in 2014:
$4,145

Maximum % of income you have to pay for the non-tobacco premium, if eligible for a subsidy:
4.51% Amount you pay for the premium:$1,129 per year (which equals 4.51% of your household income and covers 27% of the overall premium)

You could receive a government tax credit subsidy of up to:$3,016
(which covers 73% of the overall premium).

====================================================================

Lastly, I did a calculation for 2 individuals with 1 child and a household income of 54,000.

Household income in 2014:
276% of poverty level

Unsubsidized annual health insurance premium in 2014:
$6,680

Maximum % of income you have to pay for the non-tobacco premium, if eligible for a subsidy:
8.82%

Amount you pay for the premium:
$4,762 per year (which equals 8.82% of your household income and covers 71% of the overall premium)

You could receive a government tax credit subsidy of up to:
$1,918 (which covers 29% of the overall premium)

Now for fun, here’s your little known Black History Fact of the day 🙂

Term “Obamacare”The term “Obamacare” was originally coined by opponents, notably Mitt Romney in 2007, as a pejorative term. According to The New York Times, the term was first put in print in March 2007, when healthcare lobbyist Jeanne Schulte Scott penned it in a health industry journal. “We will soon see a ‘Giuliani-care’ and ‘Obama-care’ to go along with ‘McCain-care,’ ‘Edwards-care,’ and a totally revamped and remodeled ‘Hillary-care‘ from the 1990s”, Schulte Scott wrote. The expression Obamacare first was used in early 2007 generally by writers describing the candidate’s proposal for expanding coverage for the uninsured according to research by Elspeth Reeve at The Atlantic magazine. The word was first uttered in a political campaign by Mitt Romney in May 2007 in Des Moines, Iowa. Romney said: “In my state, I worked on healthcare for some time. We had half a million people without insurance, and I said, ‘How can we get those people insured without raising taxes and without having government take over healthcare’. And let me tell you, if we don’t do it, the Democrats will. If the Democrats do it, it will be socialized medicine; it’ll be government-managed care. It’ll be what’s known as Hillarycare or Barack Obamacare, or whatever you want to call it.”

By mid-2012, Obamacare had become the most common colloquial term to refer to the law by both supporters and opponents, in contrast to the use of “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act” or “Affordable Care Act” in more formal and official use. Use of the term in a positive sense was suggested by Democratic politicians such as John Conyers.[289] President Obama endorsed the nickname, saying, “I have no problem with people saying Obama cares. I do care.” Because of the number of “Obamacare” search engine queries, the Department of Health and Human Services purchased Google advertisements, triggered by the term, to direct people to the official HHS site.[291] In March 2012, the Obama reelection campaign embraced the term “Obamacare”, urging Obama’s supporters to post Twitter messages that begin, “I like #Obamacare because…”.  After its debut as a phrase on Capitol Hill, according to an analysis by the Sunlight Foundation, from July 2009 to June 2012 the term “Obamacare” was used nearly 3,000 times in congressional speeches.

SO, THANKS MITT! OBAMA REALLY DOES CARE! OBAMACARE!

    I LOVE IT…Lol.

Btw: I’m sure by now most sane and reasonably intelligent folks have figured out that the thing the Repubs most FEAR about *ObamaCare* is that it will prove to be a most Successful program, adding to the already impressive lesgislative legacy of the first African-American President in American history! 🙂
